The Poseidon desalination plant in Carlsbad is set to deliver a new source of water for San Diego County when it’s completed late next year, but it will be a limited portion of the region’s water menu for years to come.

The facility is one of three local projects that are scheduled to provide desalinated water for greater San Diego in years to come. Poseidon’s is scheduled to come on line in November 2015 and is expected to generate up to 54 million gallons of potable water per day, enough to meet about 7 percent of the county’s water needs.

“The goal is to provide a new supply of water for San Diego that’s under local control,” said Poseidon Vice President Peter MacLaggan. “This source, since it’s not dependent on rainfall and snowmelt, is the (region’s) first drought-proof source of water.”
