Hundreds of California Republicans who gathered for their party’s state convention this weekend in Burlingame heard an astonishing range of strategies designed to bring their damaged party back from more than two decades of decline.
From strengthening gun rights to pounding Democrats on pension reform, affirmative action and what they call Obamacare, GOP leaders pondered a diverse menu of candidates – and potential answers – as they attempt to improve their batting average in the 2014 elections.
“We are a party in the state of California in need of some rebuilding,” said former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who received a standing ovation from her fellow Republicans, whose party now represents just 29 percent of the state’s registered voters.
