Americans looking to whip up a bacon cheeseburger are in for some sticker shock. ‘Thanks to a perfect storm of drought, disease and strong demand, the key ingredients that make up the juicy treat are
at record-high prices, pinching shoppers and eaters nationwide. Consumers can expect to pay about 32 cents more per burger than they did a year ago,’ reports Pro Agriculture’s Helena Bottemiller Evich.
And the bacon cheeseburger is only the beginning. Perishable foods across the grocery store are leading the way on food inflation, according to the report. “The way this is shaking out, we’re in a trend where we’re seeing very strong inflation on the perimeter of the grocery store, but not in the middle aisles,” according to Richard Volpe, an economist at the Department of Agriculture. “If your shopping basket is weighted more heavily toward these perishable foods, if you are a heavy consumer of meat, seafood, dairy and fruit, then they are seeing higher than average food price inflation.”
