Research & Analytics

Thorough, compelling research helps TGG clients achieve their business objectives with advocacy at the right time with the right people. TGG continuously and aggressively monitors emerging public policy, legislative and regulatory trends, providing insights and expert guidance on issues and courses of action.

Progress in Sacramento is in the details – spotting and understanding a nuance of the complex legislative and regulatory processes. Our expert research staff daily consults numerous sources of information and opportunity, reporting as merited.

Nothing happens in isolation in California’s Capitol. In addition to issue management, our tactical research identifies supporters, opponents and fence-sitters – and provides navigation for advocates.

Alliances & Coalitions

Your mother was right – you ARE judged by the friends you keep. There are dozens of trade associations. Major bills give rise to working groups. Significant regulations have coteries of stakeholders.

There are permanent alliances and temporary coalitions. And there are hidden agendas and historic baggage. If your mother was here, she’d say you DO need TGG expertise to align your advocacy and education efforts with friends who are, well, real friends.

Writing with Impact

Impactful writing is essential for winning advocacy. Messaging is the first step. The TGG lead writer /editor – a former LA Times staffer and State agency communications director – works closely with clients and TGG advocates to craft the 3-4 points that will vividly tell the client’s story.

Client issue message points are woven into testimony, position papers and correspondence. Each must be written in a specific style and in a specific voice, tailored to the individual legislators, regulators and staff.

Speeches, op eds, letters to the editor and professional journal articles – if circumstances warrant – can quickly become part of a client’s arsenal.

E-mail blasts, Facebook posts, blogs and even tweets may be new wave communications, but they still depend on the written word, crafted for advocacy and education on specific issues.

TGG writing makes client advocacy points clear and clean, digesting mountains of data and anecdotes into key facts to tell a compelling story. Knowing what to write when to deliver the message and who will listen and understand – that’s our message.

Political Action

Financial support for candidates, initiatives and other campaigns is an option. As former staffers for governors, legislative leaders, initiative campaigns and political journalists – TGG can work with you to make a carefully calculated decision.

There are many considerations. We help you assess district demographics, campaign staff, polling, local issues and finally, when to write the check. Timing, as someone said, is 90% of political action.

And there many other vital factors, usually not obvious. For example, where do legislative leaders stand? Who supports and who opposes…and what does this mean? Who will notice your presence and what are the future implications?

Initiatives are a special category. Fortunately, TGG executives are veterans of many statewide ballot campaigns. We’ve won more than we’ve lost, but we offer valuable perspectives from both experiences.

Executive Coaching

Managing critical public policy, legislative and regulatory action and education in the glare of the public eye is high stakes. Those in leadership positions must understand how to leverage opportunities, control risks and respond adroitly to crises.

Increasing personal effectiveness in the Capitol, TGG counsels client executives on leveraging a situation or circumstance. We draw on our deep knowledge of the principals and the processes, while working with the client’s frame of reference from business, nonprofit or local government.

On an individual level, TGG advocacy coaching includes:

  • Be ready and confident for the media. We will prepare you for a single interview, a full-blown media tour, an editorial board Q&A or a press conference, whether it’s a new experience or to brush-up your skills.
  • Speaking appearances in front of large general audiences, service and public affairs groups, community organizations or small gatherings of opinion leaders – we’ll hone your delivery skills and performance abilities.
  • Testifying before legislative committees, regulatory boards and governor’s staffers. We’ll make sure the words are powerful and calibrated for the individuals engaged in your issue, and we’ll provide you with a understanding of the full context of your meeting. No surprises.

Sponsoring a Special Event

After participating in and managing thousands of Capitol events, galas and salons, TGG has the educated helping hands to guide clients through the thicket of the protocols, details and arrangements for effectively attending and hosting a public reception in the Rotunda, private dinner for a few influentials, release of a study, media conference…whatever the occasion and the advocacy objective.

Crisis Rapid Response

Governors, legislators, regulators and staff are influenced by the news, which is now on a 24/7 cycle. Misinformation fills a vacuum – it’s a law of online media physics. TGG deploys with our clients’ executives to deliver targeted facts to Capitol audiences, to ensure understanding of an evolving, inevitable human-caused or natural disaster.

You get one chance to get it right. The inquiries are relentless – from elected officials, regulators, reporters, activists and residents. Lawyers, though essential, are not enough. Let us help you be prepared to communicate in an upside-down situation.

And the follow-up can continue for months. TGG’s relationships, based on personal integrity, provide continuous opportunities for educating, clarifying and positioning.
