Nine dots are the foundation for Californians, their new governor and legislators as we confront an historic slate of societal issues on a backdrop of schism….

Innovation and teamwork are already the hallmarks of Gov. Newsom’s young administration.  He issued an Executive Order for a private-public partnership to establish nimble procurements.  He’s pushing forward simultaneously on healthcare, housing and tax reforms.

Legislators are enthusiastically introducing bills and scheduling budget hearings.

With nine dots, we can set an example for the rest of the US in collaborative problem-solving.  California is full of smart, innovative people – you’re among them, of course.  You’ve heard of the nine-dot creativity test?

The objective, easily achieved, is to connect the dots with four straight lines, without lifting your pencil from the paper.  (To use media from the last century.)

Most people see only box.  Connecting the dots is impossible.  If your creative vision is outside the box, connecting the dots is easy.  Just extend one line outside the boundary and pivot to the next dot.  (See example here: http://www.brainstorming.co.uk/puzzles/ninedotsnj.html)

Gov. Newsom calls for innovation, and we all know the answer is beyond the box.  It will take all of us to connect the dots.
